Quick Guide to Loading a Barbell

Loading a barbell correctly is a basic gym skill, but doing the mental math mid-workout wastes time and can lead to mistakes. This calculator instantly tells you which plates to put on each side so you can focus on your training.

How It Works

The calculator subtracts the bar weight from your target, divides by two (since you load both sides equally), then uses a greedy algorithm to select the fewest plates possible. It starts with the largest available plate and works down, which is both the most efficient approach and the standard way plates are loaded in any gym.

Standard Plate Sizes

The calculator uses the most common plate sets found in commercial gyms:

  • Metric (kg) - 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, and 1.25 kg plates with a standard 20 kg barbell
  • Imperial (lbs) - 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, and 2.5 lb plates with a standard 45 lb barbell

Tips for Loading

  • Always use collars - Plates can shift during a lift, especially on pressing movements. Collars prevent uneven loading.
  • Load both sides evenly - Never load one side completely before the other. Alternate sides to prevent the bar from tipping in the rack.
  • Double-check before lifting - A quick visual count of the plates on each side takes two seconds and prevents loading errors that could cause injury.
