Knowing how many sets to do per muscle group each week is one of the most important decisions in program design. Too few sets and you leave gains on the table. Too many and you outrun your recovery, accumulating fatigue that stalls progress. Your training split, experience level, and individual recovery capacity all play a role in finding the right number.
Your choice of training split determines how often each muscle group is trained and how many sets you can fit per session:
Not every muscle group needs the same volume. If certain muscles are lagging, allocate more sets to those groups while maintaining or slightly reducing volume for stronger areas. A common approach is to push priority muscles toward the upper end of their MAV range while keeping maintenance muscles near their MEV. This creates a more sustainable total training load while directing more growth stimulus where you need it most.
Track your weekly sets and compare them against volume landmarks (MEV, MAV, MRV). If a muscle group is growing well at 14 sets per week, there is no reason to push it to 20. Conversely, if progress has stalled despite consistent training, you may need to add volume. Make changes gradually, adding 1-2 sets per week rather than making large jumps that make it hard to identify what is working.
